Trefoil Legions - Wargaming Ramblings

A lot can change when hobby inspiration strikes. Since my foray into 15mm I have ended up coming back to the Horus Heresy. Now I am not sold on third edition and the changes to the game isn't exactly for me right now. I am looking for that pick up and play game that I am not getting from other Warhammer properties. So second edition has been my jam.  Now with this I have always wanted to run blackshields from their first edition incarnation to now I have been enamored with the idea of these offshoot forces that are either wiped out in the fires of the age of darkness or lived long enough to found the weirdest and craziest of all successor chapters.  For me this was originally grey armoured mk4 when Betrayal at Calth came out, and then it just sat in the back ground as I built up my Imperial Fists for second edition.  A selection of said Imperial Fists Eventually I played around with militia (and too many tanks), then Night Lords (which I need to finish) and finally Solar ...

 I for one will never say that I am the most focused hobbyist, although I have been described as otherwise by others. I am very much the finish 75% of a force and move on kinda guy if I can’t get something done quick enough.  Lately I have been adding projects into an app called Figure Case which has highlighted a few things. One, I have too many miniatures and when the figure is not yet finished and is close to 3000 and only includes projects and models I care about is kinda nuts. Secondly is, I have many piles of partially finished units. More primed and discarded parts to projects but definitely half started things that have ended up hidden.  Today I chose to try and finish one set of those in an attempt to finish some armies or finally decide to try and sell some parts of my unfinished collections (looking at your Spartans).  The lucky unit was a raptor squad from my Red Corsairs army.  These guys already came from a previous attempt to build a Sons of Horus...

Last weekend I was able to get some games of Team Yankee in and I must say that I am hooked on the system. It was fun, fluid and deadly in a way that Games Workshop games used to feel. Morale mechanics are desperately enjoyed in this ruleset.  For the first game I played my ANZACs and my opponent borrowed my Soviet force. We played contact and had a blast. I struggled with my leopards to get through the T-64s front armour, I even had the misfortune of not getting a successful reserve roll to get my Abrams into the fight. I was able to get the win after a misplay and my ambushing infantry platoon ended up taking one of the objectives uncontested.    We re-racked and then played another game, this time breakthrough. This was a hard fought victory for the ANZACs. My lovely opponent began to use the T-64s as they were intended and began to rush quite quickly into my lines. Now like any discerning wargamer I am partial to a good deal and when I saw that a local store (well not so local but I digress) Milsims was selling the Tanks: Modern Age starter set for $10 aud when buying ten or more you had to be sure I was going to buy ten of the buggers.  This lucky haul plus a Team Yankee starter set and a BMP company starter that they just had lying around when I went to go pick up my order came together to create a lovely T-64 battalion.  In all its cheap cheap glory Because of the way that this army has been put together it is not the most optimised army ever but it does match my idea of what would be hitting NATO armies after the first offensive actions. Half strength companies of tanks with smaller companies of infantry in second line IFVs was exactly what I was thinking of when this list came together. I think this may be a common occurrence for hobbyists that are in the hobby for a long enough time to come back to a game that they thought they would never come back to and then go way too hard way too fast.  For me this was Battlefront's WWW3: Team Yankee. I had enjoyed it years ago with a mate back when my Abrams were getting cut down in droves vs his leopard 2's. Now its been close to a decade since then and I have recently sold my Team Yankee collection. Perusing through local store shelves and making an impulse buy after thoughts of cold war forces and tanks galore.  That impulse buy was a platoon of Abrams that this time ended up being painted in my national colours for the ANZACs which led the spiral of realising that the 15mm scale and the cold war aesthetic (its a weird 80s-90s combo) was something that I just vibe with.
